What We Check Before Recommending New Tyres in Shaftesbury & Blandford

When someone visits us in Shaftesbury or Blandford with a tyre concern, one of the first questions we often hear is, “Do I actually need new tyres?”

It’s a fair question. Tyres aren’t something anyone wants to replace unless they genuinely have to. At DCM Autocentres, our approach is straightforward. We only recommend new tyres when they’re necessary for safety, legality or long-term reliability.

As one of the leading tyre specialists serving Shaftesbury and Blandford, we see everything from slow punctures and pothole damage to uneven wear caused by Dorset’s mix of rural and town roads. Before advising any replacement, here’s what we carefully check.

Tread depth

This is always the starting point. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre.

However, we also look at how close a tyre is to that limit. A tyre at 1.7mm might technically pass today, but in wet or cold conditions around Dorset, stopping distances increase quickly as tread reduces. In some cases, it’s safer to plan ahead rather than wait until it becomes urgent.

Uneven wear patterns

Tyres don’t always wear evenly. If one edge is more worn than the other, or the centre is wearing faster, it can indicate alignment issues or incorrect tyre pressure.

With the amount of rural driving around Shaftesbury and Blandford, potholes and uneven road surfaces can easily knock wheels slightly out of alignment. When we see uneven wear, we look at the underlying cause, not just the tyre itself.

Sidewall condition

The sidewall is just as important as the tread. We check for cracks, cuts and bulges. A bulge usually means internal damage, often caused by potholes or kerb impacts.

This is something we see frequently during the colder months when road surfaces deteriorate. If the tyre’s structure is compromised, replacement is the safest option.

Tyre age

Even if tread depth is still legal, older tyres can harden over time and lose grip, particularly in wet conditions. We check the manufacturing date and assess the overall condition of the rubber.

Age alone doesn’t automatically mean replacement, but it’s an important factor when advising customers.

Repairable punctures

Not every issue requires a brand new tyre. If you’ve picked up a nail or screw, we check whether the puncture can be safely repaired.

In many cases, a proper repair solves the problem and saves you money. If it’s repairable, we’ll tell you.

How the vehicle is used

We also ask about driving habits. A vehicle mainly used for short trips around town may wear tyres differently compared to one regularly travelling across Dorset or further afield.

Recommending the right tyre isn’t just about size. It’s about suitability, safety and long-term value.

When we do recommend replacement

If a tyre is unsafe, illegal, structurally damaged or too worn to perform properly, we’ll explain clearly why and show you the issue.

There’s no pressure. Just honest advice from a local team that works with tyres every day.

Tyres are about safety, not sales

Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road. Grip, braking distance and control all depend on them being in good condition.

If you’re in Shaftesbury or Blandford and unsure whether your tyres need replacing, a quick check can give you peace of mind. And if they’re fine, we’ll tell you that too.

I have used this company twice recently, an emergency tyre on a Beetle and an emergency (unusual) battery on a classic Golf. Both times they have been excellent. Very helpful, professional and friendly staff. Highly recommend .

We highly recommend DCM! We travel over an hour to use their services because the team is always so friendly, supportive, and professional. They clearly explain any work needed without pressuring us—always prioritising the safety of our vehicle. Their online system is fantastic, offering a clear breakdown and photos of their findings, which really helps us feel informed and confident. When we couldn’t make it during business hours to collect our car, they kindly arranged a secure lock box system so we could pick it up at our convenience. Thank you so much, DCM!
