What Happens When You Ignore an Advisory on Your MOT?

There’s usually a sense of relief when your car passes its MOT. No major faults, no failure certificate, and you’re good to go for another year.

But what about those advisories listed at the bottom of the report?

Many drivers see an MOT advisory and think, “It passed, so it can’t be that important.” While it’s true that advisories won’t fail your vehicle, they’re often an early warning that something is starting to wear out or deteriorate.

At DCM Autocentres, we regularly see small advisories turn into bigger and more expensive repairs simply because they were left too long.

What is an MOT advisory?

An advisory is something identified during the MOT test that isn’t serious enough to fail the vehicle but may require attention in the future.

Examples might include:

  • Tyres approaching the legal tread limit
  • Brake pads showing signs of wear
  • Slight corrosion on certain components
  • Suspension parts beginning to deteriorate
  • Minor fluid leaks

Think of an advisory as your car giving you advance notice that something will likely need attention sooner rather than later.

The problem with waiting until next year’s MOT

One of the most common mistakes drivers make is assuming they can simply wait until the next MOT.

The issue is that components continue to wear throughout the year.

A tyre that was legal but close to the limit during your MOT may become unsafe months before your next test. A brake advisory could develop into a more costly repair if left unchecked.

What starts as a warning can often become a failure.

Small repairs often become bigger repairs

Many vehicle components work together.

For example, worn brake pads are relatively straightforward to replace. If they’re ignored for too long, they can damage the brake discs as well, increasing the overall repair cost.

Similarly, a minor suspension issue can place additional strain on other components, creating further wear throughout the system.

Acting early often saves money.

Safety can be affected

Advisories aren’t just about repair bills.

Many relate directly to vehicle safety. Tyres, brakes, suspension and steering components all affect how your car performs on the road.

While an advisory may not represent an immediate danger, allowing the issue to worsen can eventually affect braking distances, handling and overall road safety.

It can affect future MOT results

A vehicle that receives several advisories one year may face a much tougher MOT the following year if nothing has been addressed.

We often see vehicles return with the same issues that were previously advised, only now they’ve deteriorated enough to become failures.

Dealing with problems gradually throughout the year is usually far less stressful than facing a long list of repairs at MOT time.

Not every advisory is urgent

It’s important to remember that not all advisories require immediate action.

Some may simply need monitoring over time, while others could reasonably wait until your next service.

The key is understanding which advisories need attention sooner and which can safely be planned for later.

That’s where good advice from a trusted garage becomes valuable.

Why we discuss advisories with customers

At our Shaftesbury and Blandford branches, we always try to explain advisories clearly.

Rather than simply handing over an MOT certificate, we’ll help customers understand what the advisory means, how serious it is and when action may be required.

That way you can make an informed decision rather than being surprised later.

A pass doesn’t always mean perfect

Passing an MOT is good news, but it doesn’t necessarily mean every component on the vehicle is in perfect condition.

Advisories exist to help drivers stay ahead of problems before they become failures, breakdowns or expensive repairs.

By paying attention to them and dealing with issues early, you can often save money, improve safety and keep your vehicle running smoothly for longer.

If you’ve recently received an MOT advisory and aren’t sure how important it is, our teams in Shaftesbury and Blandford are always happy to offer straightforward advice and help you plan the best course of action.

We highly recommend DCM! We travel over an hour to use their services because the team is always so friendly, supportive, and professional. They clearly explain any work needed without pressuring us—always prioritising the safety of our vehicle. Their online system is fantastic, offering a clear breakdown and photos of their findings, which really helps us feel informed and confident. When we couldn’t make it during business hours to collect our car, they kindly arranged a secure lock box system so we could pick it up at our convenience. Thank you so much, DCM!
