There has been plenty happening behind the scenes at our new Yeovil branch, so we thought it was time for an update.
When we last updated you, the plan was to get the doors open in roughly six weeks. As anyone who has been involved in a major garage fit-out will know, plans can change once work properly gets underway.
In this case, that is exactly what has happened.
Our Managing Director has taken a closer look at what we want the Yeovil branch to become and made the decision to invest more into the site before opening. That means the original timeline has moved back slightly, but it also means customers and businesses will be getting a much better facility when the doors finally open.
At DCM Autocentres, we would rather take a little longer and get things right than rush to hit a date simply because we mentioned it a few weeks ago.
Why has the Yeovil opening been delayed?
The simple answer is that the plans have grown.
As work progressed, we identified several improvements that would make the site work better for customers, technicians and the wholesale side of the business.
Rather than open the branch and then make major changes afterwards, the decision was made to get as much of that work completed as possible now.
It means a bit more patience is needed, but we think the end result will be well worth it.
A proper viewing area for the drive-through MOT bay
One of the improvements being introduced is a dedicated MOT viewing area alongside the drive-through MOT bay.
The MOT area is an important part of what we are building at Yeovil, and we wanted the customer experience to match the investment being made behind the scenes.
Creating a dedicated viewing area gives customers a proper place to watch their vehicle go through its MOT while allowing our technicians to carry out the test in a professional, organised environment.
Once operational, the Yeovil facility will form part of the wider MOT testing services available through DCM Autocentres.
A much bigger tyre operation
Yeovil is also going to play an important role in another side of DCM that customers may not always see.
The branch is being developed as our wholesale tyre location.
DCM does far more with tyres than simply fitting them to customers’ cars. We also supply tyres into the trade, working with garages, businesses and other customers that need reliable access to stock.
Because of that, the amount of tyre storage required at Yeovil is on a completely different scale.
Bigger and better organised tyre storage
Rather than settling for basic racking and making the available space work, we are creating a much larger and more organised tyre storage system.
The plans now include conveyor belts to help move tyres around the facility more efficiently.
When you are dealing with large volumes of stock, organisation matters. A better storage and handling system should make it easier for the team to locate, move and prepare tyres while keeping the warehouse organised as the wholesale side of the business continues to grow.
It is a significant improvement compared with the original plan and one of the main reasons we are happy to allow a little more time for the fit-out.
For retail customers, our existing tyre fitting services will remain a major part of what DCM does, while the Yeovil site gives us more capacity to support the wider tyre trade too.
Building the branch for the long term
Opening a new garage is not just about putting up the signs, installing some equipment and getting customers through the doors.
We want the Yeovil branch to be a site that works properly for years to come.
That means thinking about how vehicles move through the workshop, how customers use the building, where stock is stored and how the team can work efficiently as the branch becomes busier.
Some of the changes being made now would have been much more difficult to complete after opening.
So although delaying the opening was not originally part of the plan, it made more sense to take the opportunity while the building work was already underway.
More than just another DCM garage
Yeovil represents an important step for DCM.
Our existing branches have allowed the business to grow throughout Dorset, and Yeovil takes us further into Somerset while also giving the group a much larger base for wholesale tyre operations.
The ambition is for the site to support both everyday motorists and businesses.
From tyres and wheel alignment through to the developing MOT facilities and wider workshop services, there is a lot being brought together under one roof.
Behind that customer-facing side will be the expanded tyre storage and wholesale operation that helps support another important part of the DCM business.
Why we are not rushing it
Naturally, we want to open.
The team is excited, customers have been asking for updates and we know there are plenty of people waiting to see the finished branch.
But there is no point rushing the final stages only to wish we had done things differently a few months later.
The original six-week estimate was exactly that: an estimate.
Once the opportunity became clear to improve the MOT area, expand the tyre storage and create a better overall facility, the right decision was to give the project the extra time it needs.
Sometimes a delay means something has gone wrong.
In this case, it means we have decided to do more.
The finish line is getting closer
Despite the additional work, progress is continuing and we are getting closer.
There is still plenty happening behind the scenes, but every improvement is bringing the Yeovil branch nearer to the facility we want it to be.
We will share the confirmed opening date once we are confident everything is ready.
Until then, we want to say a genuine thank you to everyone who has been following the project, asking about the new branch and supporting DCM as we continue to grow.
Something exciting is taking shape in Yeovil
The wait will be slightly longer than first planned, but the Yeovil branch is going to be better because of it.
A drive-through MOT bay with a dedicated viewing area, a substantially larger tyre storage operation, conveyor systems and a facility designed around both retail and wholesale customers are all part of the work now taking place.
We are excited to show everyone the finished result.
Keep an eye on DCM Autocentres for more updates as the opening gets closer, or contact our team if you would like to speak to us in the meantime.
Yeovil, we are getting there. It is just going to be worth waiting a little longer for.
