Car Air Conditioning Regas: When Does Your AC Need Recharging?

Car air conditioning is one of those features you often forget about until the first properly warm day arrives. You switch it on expecting a blast of cold air, but instead get little more than a lukewarm breeze.

If that sounds familiar, your car may need an air conditioning regas.

At DCM Autocentres, we help drivers in Shaftesbury, Blandford and the surrounding Dorset areas get their air conditioning systems working properly again. An air con regas is a fairly routine job, but leaving a poorly performing system unchecked can make driving uncomfortable and may allow other problems to develop.

Here is what an air conditioning regas involves, the signs that your car may need one and why the system is useful throughout the year, not just during summer.

What is an air conditioning regas?

Your car’s air conditioning system uses refrigerant gas to cool the air before it enters the cabin. Over time, a small amount of this gas can naturally escape from the system.

As the refrigerant level drops, the air conditioning becomes less effective. It may take longer to cool the vehicle, struggle on hotter days or stop producing cold air altogether.

An air conditioning regas involves removing the remaining refrigerant, checking the system and refilling it with the correct amount of gas for the vehicle.

Different cars use different types of refrigerant, so the correct gas must be used for the make, model and age of the vehicle.

How often does a car need an air con regas?

Unlike an MOT or regular vehicle service, an air conditioning regas does not usually follow a strict yearly schedule.

Many manufacturers recommend having the system checked and recharged every couple of years, although this varies depending on the car and how often the air conditioning is used.

You may need it sooner if the system has developed a leak or if the cooling performance has dropped noticeably.

It is also worth remembering that an air conditioning regas is not always included in a standard car service. The rest of the car can be properly maintained while the air con refrigerant gradually becomes low.

Signs your air conditioning may need regassing

The most obvious sign is air that no longer feels properly cold.

Other signs can include:

  • The cabin taking much longer to cool down
  • Air feeling cool rather than cold
  • The system working better while driving than when stationary
  • Air conditioning performance changing from one journey to the next
  • Windows taking longer to demist
  • Unusual noises when the air conditioning is switched on

A weak air conditioning system does not always mean it simply needs more gas. There may be a leak, compressor fault or another issue within the system, which is why a proper check is worthwhile.

Why has the refrigerant level dropped?

Air conditioning systems are sealed, but small amounts of refrigerant can still escape naturally over time through seals, hoses and connections.

That gradual loss is normal, particularly as a car gets older.

However, if the system loses gas quickly after being recharged, it may have a leak. Continuing to refill a leaking system without investigating the cause will only provide a temporary solution.

The system should be inspected before further work is carried out.

Air conditioning is useful in winter too

Most drivers associate air conditioning with hot weather, but it has an important job during colder and wetter months as well.

Air conditioning removes moisture from the air inside the cabin. This makes it very effective at clearing misted windows, particularly during damp weather.

Running the system regularly throughout the year can also help keep seals lubricated and prevent components from sitting unused for long periods.

You do not need to have the temperature set to cold. The air conditioning can be used alongside warm air to help demist the windows more quickly.

What happens during an air con regas?

The exact process depends on the vehicle and the equipment being used, but an air conditioning regas will normally involve:

  • Identifying the correct refrigerant for the vehicle
  • Recovering the existing refrigerant
  • Checking the system pressure
  • Removing moisture and air from the system
  • Refilling it with the correct quantity of refrigerant
  • Testing the temperature and performance afterwards

The quantity of gas is important. Too little will reduce cooling performance, while too much can also prevent the system from working correctly.

What if the air conditioning still does not work?

If the system has the correct amount of refrigerant but still does not produce cold air, further investigation may be needed.

Possible causes include:

  • A refrigerant leak
  • A faulty compressor
  • Electrical or sensor problems
  • A damaged condenser
  • A blocked cabin filter
  • A problem with the fan or ventilation system

This is why it is helpful to explain exactly what the air conditioning is doing when booking the car in. Details such as strange noises, smells or whether the problem appeared suddenly can help narrow down the cause.
